Why Beeswaxed Fabric? A Simple Guide

What beeswaxed fabric is, why people choose it over plastic wrap, and what to know about using it with food.

What is beeswaxed fabric?

Beeswaxed fabric is cloth, most often cotton, coated with beeswax and usually some plant oil and tree resin. The coating makes the cloth pliable and slightly tacky so it can hold its shape around food.

Why people choose it

Beeswax cloth is widely used as a reusable alternative to single-use plastic wrap. Unlike plastic film, which can persist in the environment for a very long time, beeswax cloth is described as biodegradable.

It is also breathable, which is one reason it is popular for keeping food like bread fresh.

Good to know

Beeswax cloth isn't ideal for every food — raw meat, fish and very wet foods are better kept in a container. Food-safety authorities also recommend choosing cloths made with food-contact-suitable fabric and food-grade beeswax.
